Handy Township

Handy township was organized on March 6, 1838. In surveying terms, the township is 3 north, range 3 east. It is located on the western border of Livingston County just north of the center. To the north is Conway township; east is Howell township; south is Iosco township; west are Ingham and Leroy townships of Ingham County.

According the 1880 History of Livingston County Michigan Calvin Handy was the first settler. On March 25, 1836 Mr. Handy of Thompkins County, New York. In May the Handy family arrived by way of the Erie Canal and Lake Erie to Detroit. From Detroit, settlers had to travel by wagon along the Grand River Turnpike. The Village of Fowlerville was incorporated on April 15, 1871. In late April 1873 the village was re-incorporated. By 1880 the village contained two churches, Methodist Episcopal and Baptist, a school, two grist mills, four hotels, a bank, fifteen to twenty stores selling sundry items, a weekly newspaper called The Review, and 1200 residents. Fowlerville remains a busy village today.
